Big challenges need big (beauty) bucks!

Six months after Stories from the Beauty Parlor’s project launch, our Berlin and US team met up in New York to strategize about the next 2.0 step of our young organisation.

Hate it or love it - make-up, hair, and personal care companies make $690 billion in yearly revenues from our joy, fun, self-care, anxieties, and societal pressure for constant glow-ups and touch-ups.

In a world on fire, we think it’s time to redistribute some of that wealth. Turn self-care into community care.

As a consequence of the global push toward the right and straight-up authoritarianism, funds for social issues are being cut everywhere. Statistics show that the first ones to go are always funds for women’s, LGBTQ+, and minority issues.

In 2023, the percentage of funds reaching women’s organisations was already at a bleak 1–2% of all global funds. Where will it be in two years? In five or ten years, with the current developments?

We think there can be no “business as usual” during times like these especially not among companies that earn immense profits from the very communities currently under attack. And even if we wanted to, the gaps in funding being cut can never be filled with only heartwarming community-led fundraising efforts.

We need to team up and put pressure on THE BIG BEAUTY BUCKS, after all, we are the hand that feeds them.

Why not set a humble goal: an additional 2% of those $690 billion revenues to support feminist grassroots organisations?
