New Morocco Podcast Episode, Interview Series, and Upcoming Events!
In the two months since our launch party, the Beauty Parlor team has been hard at work. Our third podcast episode, Morocco: Hammam, community care... and divorce, is now live. It takes us into the communal care world of hammams, a centuries old tradition. We explore topics like intergenerational care, female financial empowerment, Moroccan beauty secrets, and current feminist struggles like divorce.
Our third episode proves that caring for the self is about more than hyper-individualistic capitalist jargon, but rather a complex effort to connect ourselves to the women* in our lives who make our sense of belonging stronger. To learn more, check out our trailer for the episode here, or listen on Spotify and Soundcloud now.
New Interview Series
We just launched a new interview series on our Instagram, discussing the role of women* in communities around the world, ranging from El Salvador to Turkey to Tunisia. The first interview features Sezen from Turkey as she delves into how her hometown, Antakya, on the Turkish-Syrian border, has dealt with the aftermath of the devastating 2023 earthquakes through the use of container salons. As we ask her and others from our launch party about their experiences, we paint an intimate picture of, to use Sezen’s own words, the often under-appreciated, unrecognized community care of women.
Liked the good energy and vibes at our launch party? Soon we are kicking off a series of events to bring together our Berlin community again! First out is a joint Palestinian-Ukrainian fundraiser, supported by Berlin-based Ukrainian and Palestinian artists, restaurants, and beauticians.
Our fundraiser will be accompanied by the launch of our intersectional-feminist book club, which will start officially in September. We plan to host monthly book club meetings in beauty parlors thereafter to discuss fiction and nonfiction written by and for women around the world, encouraging community building and a safe space to discuss women*’s stories. Each month will feature an author from a different country, developing global awareness and building bonds through the joy of reading. We love libraries and bookshops, but know that there’s something about the space of a beauty parlor that will lend itself to powerful conversations.
Want to help us narrow the gender funding gap while amplifying women’s* and LGTBTQIA* voices from around the globe? We are looking to widen our network and get recommendations for foundations and partners that would be interested in supporting women’s initiatives, queer causes, and media work.
