Coming soon: Beauty Parlor Feminist Book Club

Building on our feminist book swop at our launch event - we are excited to announce our monthly accessible book club! In a world where women’s and queer rights are under attack globally, as public funds are being cut from cultural institutions and spaces in combination with increasing censorship, we are talking crucial conversation and community building to where it’s already happening!

We will meet monthly in migrant-led beauty parlors to spotlight global feminist and queer literature. Building on the tradition of oral storytelling and exchange in beauty spaces, we aim to bring in the world of written narrative and provide an open forum for participants to discuss their connections and reactions to the selected literature.

Each session will be hosted in a beauty parlor whose owner’s background matches that of the selected book, emphasizing global connection and showcasing diverse culture, beauty, and self-care rituals. For instance, if we read a book from an Afgan female writer, we meet in and Afghani-owned salon - you get it... The aim is to build bridges between different cultures and spotlight often-undervalued female leadership and care work, for the community and the world, with selected books centering global stories and female empowerment.

In a world full of fast content and non-fiction, we decided to focus on novels for what literature does best in every corner of the world: using storytelling to grant access to new worlds and perspectives.

Keep an eye out on social media for more information, including our first reading selection and salon location, which will be revealed soon. We look forward to the opportunity for this book club to foster community, explore global literature, and expand worldviews.
