Upcoming salon book club ft. author Susan Lieu and Glowy Beauty’s founder

We are BEYOND excited to announce our first feminist global novels book club of 2026!

For this occasion, we chose an incredibly rich memoir called “The Manicurist’s Daughter” by Susan Lieu, a Vietnamese American author, activist and performer, whose work explores intergenerational trauma, impossible beauty standards, dysfunctional families and unresolved griefs.

This book follows Susan’s story as she searches for answers after her mother dies during plastic surgery. Refugees from the Vietnam War, her family escaped to California in the 1980s after five failed attempts. Upon arrival, Susan’s mother was their savvy, charismatic North Star, setting up two successful nail salons and orchestrating every success ― until Susan was eleven. That year, her mother died from a botched tummy tuck. After the funeral, no one was ever allowed to talk about her or what had happened.

What is extra special: Our book club will take place at Glowy — a stunning Vietnamese-owned nail salon and beauty bar in Prenzlauer Berg. Joining us for the evening is Amelie Hoang, the founder of Glowy herself!

Date & Time: Mon 20.04, 17:45 - 20:30

Location: Winsstraße 59, 10405

Until then; get your copy of the book, block social media and immerse yourself in the story!

You can find “The Manicurist’s Daughter” at local bookstores such as She Said (13 €) as well as for free at the library Libby App! If anyone can’t find the book we will have some copies at our office in Neukölln to pick up too!
