Feminist (Syrian) Book Club with Aleppo Beauty Treatment

It is time for our next feminist book club

For this cozy fall session we are hosting our feminist book club together with Melon Seeds Collective, a Syrian run artist collective.

This time around we are not only bringing good discussion, but also a traditional Syrian Aleppo facial and hair treatment, to really tie together the elements of beauty and female community care!

The book we’ll be reading is The Occasional Virgin by Hanan al-Shaykh (which can be found as a PDF for those who prefer it).

The story follows two Lebanese women in their mid-thirties vacationing in Italy together. Successful in their careers and professional lives, the two friends are contemplating their love lives. Being from two very different religious backgrounds–but both being raised in Beirut–with their own unique experiences, Huda and Yvonne are discussing views on sex from both a conservative and liberated perspective, the force of sensuality and how it is shaped, and what is means to be a sexual female being in a male-dominated reality. In that sense, the novel can be read as an exploration in female friendship and sensuality.
