Sudan Partner Fundraiser Update: Fujan Niswan
We received a heartwarming email from the Sudanese feminist grassroot Funjan Niswan who we fundraised for in May. The email was packed with photos and stories from some of the movements they created with the help of your donations.
Among others, Funjan Niswan had already organized interactive psychosocial sessions for Sudanese girls and women affected by conflict and displacement, now seeking a safe haven in Najera. A group of 20 women gathered to share their experiences, create a safe space for expression and discuss their common challenges during their refugee and displacement journeys.
Topics that were discussed revolved around the psychological strain of war–the mental wounds of individuals caused by armed conflict and the importance of mental health in building resilience and recovery. The group also spoke about deteriorating economic conditions as a result of conflict and how refugee laws and rights in a host country can be leveraged when seeking protection.
During the sessions it became apparent that some women were in need of advanced psychological support and intervention. The group also acted as a referral for women to receive specialized care and professional support.
Concluding the session, the women were provided with women health kits including: sanitary pads for two months, toothbrushes as well as toothpaste, underwear and antiseptic soap. We are also amazed to hear that the Sudanese women involved in Funjan Niswan took the decision to use some of the funds provided by us to help them register the until-now grassroot group as a legal non-profit, future-safing even more impact!
Funjan Niswan own conclusion of the group session work is:
"Rebuilding the psychological peace of women in displacement camps and regions begins with creating safe spaces for listening and providing integrated support that preserves their human dignity."
