Recap of salon book club with Susan Lieu at Glowy

Last week was a super sweet first for both Stories from the Beauty Parlor, Susan Lieu and Glowy Beauty Bar ! In an intimate after work Stories from the Beauty Parlor’s book club met for manicures, chitchats and book discussion about the Vietnamese-American memoir “The manicurist daughter”. We were joined in by the author herself as well as the Glowy founder Amelie Hoang. We were very happy to hold space for the stories of two Vietnamese manicurists’ daughters, creators and powerhouses on two continents to be connected and shared.

The evening was beyond wholesome. It was a testament of what happens when a group of women come together to listen, share and care for one another. Susan’s inspiring story of navigating intergenerational trauma, finding her roots as well as a path to healing sparked many insightful conversations about family dynamics, mother-daughter relationships, the lack of expectation and preparation for womanhood, and our relationships to food and body image as womxn.

This intimate sharing circle reminds us of the power of writing and reading — catalysing new perspectives and change — and how beauty salons worldwide continues to offer womxn a safe space for storytelling and community.

Special thanks to Maria Sturm (@maria__sturm) for capturing these beautiful moments!

See y’all at our next book club in May!
